Ma urges nationals not to be cheated by the Democratic Progressive Party again

The China Post news staff

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou of the opposition Kuomintang yesterday called for the public not to be cheated again by the now ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that has failed to take care of the livelihood of local people.

Ma issued the call when stumping for Lawmaker Kao Shih-po of the KMT at a ceremony marking the inauguration of Kao's campaign headquarters. Kao has been nominated by the KMT to run in the legislative election slated for Jan. 12, 2008.

Ma said that since the DPP took power in 2000, Taiwan's economy has been on the decline, the amount of corruption instigated by DPP government officials has been on the rise, and the poor's livelihood has been plagued.

Accordingly, local people had better concentrate their votes on KMT candidates for both the legislative and presidential elections, so as to give the DPP a big lesson and by supporting the KMT as a ruling party again.

On the same occasion, Speaker Wang Jin-pyng of the Legislative Yuan, who has been nominated as the party's No.1 lawmaker-at large candidate in the upcoming elections, also said that only after the KMT manages to dominate the parliament can the KMT smoothly win the presidential race and complete the second changeover of the ruling party.

Earlier yesterday morning, Ma and Wang also stumped for Lawmaker Yen Ching-biao of the Non-partisan Solidarity Union at the inauguration ceremony of Yen's campaign headquarters in Tachia Township, Taichung County of central Taiwan.

In fact, after winding up his four-month long-stay campaign, Ma has kicked off his second-phase tour of local counties and townships, mainly to campaign for legislative candidates of the KMT and Non-partisan Solidarity Union, in a bid to make the KMT and the union win the majority of the 113 legislative seats in the upcoming legislative elections.

Besides gearing up to solicit support from more voters in the upcoming legislative election and presidential race (slated for March 22), the KMT, in fact, has to do a top-priority task--teaching supporters to counter dirty electioneering tricks the DPP candidates may exercise.

The DPP has won some major elections by using alleged dirty tricks over the past years. Among them is that during last December's mayoral election in southern port city of Kaohsiung, the DPP camp held an emergency press conference several hours before the election, alleging that the KMT mayoral candidate Huang Chun-ying bribed voters to support him. Such a press conference led to Huang losing to his rival Chen Chu of the DPP by a minor margin of only 1,114 ballots, despite Huang's lead of over 10 percentage points over Chen based on public opinions conducted before the election.

The KMT will hold circuit seminars to educate supporters how to recognize the dirty electioneering tricks the DPP has adopted or may adopt.
