Taipei -- Mrs. Ma Ying-jeou might not be a full time first lady, if her husband were elected.

"I'll let her make the choice," writes Ma Ying-jeou, Kuomintang candidate for president.

In a new book scheduled to be published shortly, the Kuomintang standard bearer apologizes to his wife for not being able to take good care of her and their family over the past few years.

The book is titled: "Governance: Taiwan's New Winning Strategy."

In particular, Ma points out his wife, who has a job, may continue to work. They were married in New York on Aug. 20, 1977. "I want her to do the work she loves," Ma writes.

"Because of my presidential campaign," Ma goes on, "my wife has given up window shopping for me," Ma laments. She loves to take time out to go window shopping in the evening.

Ma adds he misses the time he was able to spend with the family before he ran for mayor of Taipei.

"Those were the days when I would be able to drive them to the countryside and we'd enjoy being together as a family."

During his "long stay" campaign tour, the Kuomintang candidate picked his wife's favorite song and had it aired from a local broadcasting station.

That song was "Kite."

The melody is rich and the lyrics are full of love. "I love what my wife loves," Ma continues. "Everytime I hear the song, I remember those good old days we were together," he adds.
